Guan Yin (观音), also known as Guan Shi Yin (观世音) — "the one who perceives the sounds of the world" — is the Bodhisattva of Compassion, revered across East Asia for boundless mercy and the vow to hear the cries of all sentient beings. In the Buddhist tradition, Guan Yin chose to remain in this world rather than enter Nirvana, so that all beings might be guided away from suffering.
